Elderus Monitor Beta

Caregiver Setup Guide

About 5 minutes at your loved one's computer, plus your own phone or laptop.

Elderus Monitor has two parts: a Chrome extension installed on your loved one's computer that watches Amazon.com activity, and a private dashboard where you see that activity and set protection gates. Nothing is installed on your own device — the dashboard is just a website.

1
On your device
Create your caregiver account
  1. Request access from the Elderus Monitor page. Once you're accepted, we'll send you a link to create your caregiver account.
  2. After creating your account, you'll land on the Setup page. Under Add a Person to Monitor, enter your loved one's first name and click Add Person.
2
On their computer
Install the extension
  1. Open Chrome on their computer — the same Chrome profile they actually use for shopping.
  2. Open the install link we sent you when you were accepted into the beta.
  3. Click Add to Chrome → Add extension.
  4. Recommended: click the puzzle-piece icon at the top right of Chrome and pin Elderus Monitor so its icon stays visible.
  5. Also recommended: on the chrome://extensions page, open Elderus Monitor's Details and turn on Allow in Incognito.

On their computer, with your phone in hand
Pair the extension to your account
  1. On your phone: log in to monitor.elderus.org → Setup → Generate Pairing Code on your loved one's card. The 6-character code appears right there. (Codes expire after 15 minutes, so generate it now, not ahead of time.)
  2. On their computer: click the Elderus Monitor icon in Chrome, type the code, and click Pair Extension.
  3. That's it. Browse to amazon.com, look at any product, then check your phone — the activity should appear in your dashboard's Timeline within a few seconds.

On your dashboard
Recommended first configuration

Days 1–3: just watch. Leave gates off. The Timeline shows cart activity and completed purchases; you'll quickly see the real pattern — what hours, what kinds of items, how often.

Then add your first gate. From the dashboard's Gates page, we recommend starting with a Time of Day gate covering the overnight hours you saw in the timeline (this one is the most reliable — it doesn't depend on reading prices from Amazon's pages). Choose what happens at checkout:

  • Gate 1 — Pause and wait: pauses checkout with a wait timer; they can proceed after the wait. Good gentle friction.
  • Gate 2 — Hold for approval: checkout is held until you approve or deny it from your dashboard's Approvals page.
  • Gate 3 — Simulated checkout: shows a realistic "order placed" confirmation; no purchase happens and nothing is charged. Designed for advancing memory impairment, where visible blocking causes distress. It requires your explicit acknowledgment when you enable it, and we encourage discussing this approach with their healthcare provider. In your dashboard, these events are always labeled truthfully — look under Approvals → Resolved for "Redirected (simulated completion)."

What Elderus Monitor can and can't see

  • It monitors Amazon.com in Chrome on this computer only. Purchases from a phone, tablet, Alexa, another browser, or another computer will not appear.
  • Amazon changes its website often. Occasionally an order shows "item details unavailable" — the total is still tracked. Elderus Monitor is a Beta product: it adds visibility and friction, but it is not a guarantee that every purchase is caught, and it isn't a substitute for direct care, legal guardianship, or financial controls.

If something seems off

  • Extension icon → popup shows the connection status. A red "Can't reach server" means the computer is offline or the service is unreachable.
  • Gate changes you make take effect on their next page load on Amazon (at most about a minute later).
  • The popup's "Pair with a new code" link re-pairs the extension anytime — for example after removing and re-adding a monitored person.
  • Questions or anything confusing? Reach us through the Elderus Monitor page.
